LIV Golf confirm venue for Individual Championship finale as Greg Norman shares excitement
LIV Golf CEO and commissioner Greg Norman has announced the venue for the individual championship finale, with the race for the title to be staged in Chicago in September
LIV Golf has confirmed its season finale will be held at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Chicago from September 13-15.
The Saudi Arabia-bankrolled tour is midway through its third season and Norman has confirmed the Individual Championship will be decided in Illinois. The venue for the subsequent Team Championship is yet to be announced.
“The passionate sports fans of Chicago have embraced the intense competition and fan-first experience that LIV Golf delivers, and this year it will be an incredible setting for a high-stakes event as players battle it out for the individual title and a roster spot for 2025,” the tour’s CEO and commissioner Greg Norman said.
“We’re thrilled to return to Illinois with an event at Bolingbrook Golf Club as we celebrate the season-long race and set the stage for the 2024 finale.”
Chile’s Joaquin Niemann, captain of Torque GC, is the runaway leader atop the season standings after six events thanks to victories in Mayakoba and Jeddah before a third-place finish in Adelaide at the weekend.
Jon Rahm is also in the mix but trails by more than 30 points in second place. The Spaniard is yet to claim his first win since his stunning move to LIV Golf in December, but he has been one of the tour’s most consistent players with a worst finish of tied-eighth in Hong Kong.
The Stinger GC paring of Dean Burmester and Louis Oosthuizen are in third and fourth respectively, while Fireballs star Abraham Ancer rounds out the top five.
LIV has revised its scoring format since its debut season in 2022, rewarding only the top eight finishers at each event with points towards the season standings. With 32 points on offer for a win at the remaining seven events before the Individual Championship, Rahm could swiftly close the gap if Niemann falters.
But the Chilean has been among the most in-form players on the planet in 2024 and he will be confident of more big results before the season finale in Chicago.
The stakes are high at the bottom of the standings, too, with the bottom seven players facing relegation from the league. As it stands, Lee Westwood, who has failed to score a single point this season with a best finish of tied-32nd, is among those in danger.
The course was designed by Arthur Hills and Steve Forrest and is based 30 miles from central Chicago. The 7,104-yard layout is punitive, with seven lakes lining the holes, including the signature 15th – a 156-yard par three with an island green.
Bolingbrook mayor Mary Basta said: “We are excited to welcome the star-studded, international field of great players to the village of Bolingbrook and Bolingbrook Golf Club.”
LIV received a timely boost of momentum over the weekend, with huge crowds packing The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia. Fans were delighted to see the Australian team Ripper GC, led by Cameron Smith, win the team championship, while Brendan Steel of HyFlyers GC claimed the individual title at 18-under-par, beating Oosthuizen by one stroke.
