Deshaun Watson’s shoulder injury and future plans are discussed by Andrew Berry.

The Browns are hopeful about Deshaun Watson’s shoulder injury as they enter their bye week in Week 5.
.

On the Wednesday of the bye week, Andrew Berry, executive vice president of football operations and general manager, met with the media to talk about a variety of topics and to give updates on Watson.
Berry stated that Watson’s shoulder injury is not considered to be long-term and that there are no structural issues with Watson’s shoulder.
He stated that they are hopeful for a quick recovery of the shoulder.
.

Against the Titans in Week 3 of the season, Watson suffered a shoulder injury.
When the quarterback kept the ball in the end zone during the third quarter, player 24 was struck.
The following week, he was listed as a limited participant in practice, and by Week 4’s matchup with the Ravens, he was formally listed as questionable.
On October, Watson put his shoulder to the test during the pregame warmup. 1 in the presence of Berry, Kevin Stefanski, the head coach.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a rookie quarterback, started the game after Watson was ultimately ruled out due to injury.
.

Berry stated that they had high hopes that Watson would participate on Sunday.
He was also as he spent the week completing his rehabilitation in order to be ready for the game on Sunday. Watson had improved throughout the week, going from being unable to raise his arm earlier in the week to testing his shoulder on Sunday during pregame.

But when he started his pregame warmup, that changed.

Berry said on Wednesday, “When we got closer to Sunday and when we put him through the pregame workout, it became clear to all of us that he couldn’t throw or drive the ball well enough to perform in the game.”.
“It was just not at a level where we felt confident that he could ultimately perform the responsibilities of his position.
If he had been a defensive tackle, running back, or someone else in that field, it probably wouldn’t have had a big impact on his job duties, and he would have been fine. But this is your quarterback, and his job is to throw the ball anywhere between 30 and 35 times per game.
If he can’t push the ball, drive it, or throw it down the field – which became very clear early in the workout – it became a very easy decision for us to not put him out there.
“.

Berry added that it was obvious during the pregame warmup that playing catch and attempting to impart the necessary zip for velocity on the ball from shorter distances was challenging, so they decided against continuing to put him through a rigorous workout.
No drives were attempted by Watson.

Berry remarked that it was “fairly obvious” what he had done to try to prepare throughout the week.
“It was clear that he couldn’t throw the ball on Sunday despite the fact that he was at home working 24 hours a day.
He wasn’t a good enough ball thrower to play.
“.

Berry claimed that the locker room was also aware that Watson was unable to participate in the game after it was decided he couldn’t play on Sunday.

The starting quarterback at that point was Thompson-Robinson.
The Browns are still confident in Thompson-Robinson as their backup quarterback, despite the fact that he struggled in his first career start, going 19 of 36 for 121 yards and three interceptions. Berry affirmed that he has no plans to alter their quarterback room.

The proverb that Berry mentioned, “Experience is a hard teacher because it gives the test first and the lesson afterwards,” is one that she loves.
And I thought that any rookie quarterback would be able to confirm that during their first start.
Despite the undoubtedly difficult circumstances, I am confident in Dorian’s honesty.
The backup’s job is to be prepared to take over at any time. I think just realistically, when you lose a game 28-3 and you don’t play well on offense, we all look at what we could have done differently to support him.
But we’ll continue to work, we’ll grow from it, we’ll learn from it, and we’ll move forward with him.
“.

Overall, the Browns are optimistic that Watson will recover and be prepared for Week 6 of the season.
With or without a quarterback scramble, or if he is in the middle of a pass play and notices a breakdown, Watson’s style also includes running the ball and using his legs.

Berry believes that they saw what Watson was fully capable against the Titans and know that Watson will continue progressing.

“Feel like he’s really coming into his own, getting comfort,” Berry said.
“Obviously having the shoulder injury and not being able to go against Baltimore is a bummer but feel really good about his progress.
“. But those instances can expose him to potential hits during games.
However, Berry said they aren’t concerned about that element, especially because he is more of a pass-first quarterback.
