Report: finally, Red Sox ‘in advanced discussions’ for GM role

The Boston Red Sox could have found a suitable replacement for Chaim Bloom.

A serious contender to take over as Boston’s new director of baseball operations is Craig Breslow, a former MLB pitcher who is currently employed in the front office of the Chicago Cubs.
According to sources familiar with the search process, Breslow has been in advanced talks with the Red Sox, according to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic.

Breslow is one of at least six prospective applicants who have attended interviews for the position, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.

Breslow won the World Series with the Red Sox in 2013 and was once dubbed “the smartest man in baseball” by La Velle E of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

It is understandable why that moniker has endured.

With degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry, Breslow, a native of Connecticut, left Yale. After a 12-year MLB career, he joined Theo Epstein in the Cubs’ front office as their “Director of Strategic Initiatives for Baseball Operations.”. His job was to “support the organization’s pitching infrastructure in Player Development and the major leagues” and “assist in evaluating and implementing data-based processes throughout all aspects of Baseball Operations.

Breslow later received a promotion to the positions of director of pitching and special assistant to the president and general manager.
In 2020, he received another promotion to assistant general manager and vice president of pitching.

Three outside candidates are said to have interviewed for the open GM position in Boston, and one of them is Breslow.
The other two are former Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington and Minnesota Twins GM Thad Levine.
