Agent Scott Boras detects a new approach from Red Sox
By now, it’s become an anticipated event of the offseason, with agent Scott Boras giving his annual speech to reporters, musing on various baseball topics, often mixing in metaphors, groan-inducing puns and the usual trash talk.
Boras spoke Wednesday, offering his recipes for building interest in the World Series (a neutral site for the entire series) and the amateur draft, and was asked about his impressions of the Red Sox.
After a second consecutive last-place finish and a reduced payroll, the Red Sox named Craig Breslow as their new baseball manager. Boras said he senses a change in direction from the owner and upper management.
“We met with them, as well as the CEOs of the new presidents,” Boras said. “They really looked like they really wanted to get out of their current position and get to a competitive level. That was a very clear message from their side.”
It is understood that Breslow and his staff have spoken with Boras here about free agent left tackle Jordan Montgomery. It wouldn’t be a surprise if another Boras client, left-handed starter Blake Snell, showed up at the same meeting.
Boras has other top players on the market, including outfielder Cody Bellinger, but the left-handed Bellinger doesn’t appear to be a good fit for the Red Sox.
Breslow made it clear that the Red Sox are determined to revamp their starting rotation, which fluctuated badly last year. Red Sox starters are posting a 4.68 ERA, which ranked them 24th out of 30 MLB teams.
Boston’s payroll was ninth through 13th among MLB clubs last year, but it’s already clear the team will spend more freely through 2024. Team president Tom Werner said last week the club’s approach would be “full throttle” and add some restrictions Breslow because he is trying to improve the outdoor product.
