According to league sources, Johnston identified four main candidates to secure Kane’s services: the New York Rangers, the Florida Panthers, the Detroit Red Wings and the Buffalo Sabres.
In addition, Johnston noted the Toronto Maple Leafs as a longer option.
The New York Rangers emerged as the primary contenders, and after Kane was acquired from Chicago at the trade deadline, the possibility of a reunion arose. Although the partnership did not produce the desired result in the playoffs, both sides are said to be willing to explore another option. The challenge will be New York’s ability to add Kane to long-term injured reserve.
