In Chris Johnston’s recent update for The Athletic, he explored potential landing spots for star Patrick Kane, whose NHL future has been the subject of intense speculation. According to league sources, Johnston identified four main candidates to secure Kane’s services: the New York Rangers, the Florida Panthers, the Detroit Red Wings and the Buffalo Sabres.
In addition, Johnston noted the Toronto Maple Leafs as a longer option.
The New York Rangers emerged as the primary contenders, and after Kane was acquired from Chicago at the trade deadline, the possibility of a reunion arose. Although the partnership did not produce the desired result in the playoffs, both sides are said to be willing to explore another option. The challenge will be New York’s ability to add Kane to long-term injured reserve. Furthermore, Kane’s role and fit with the team remain key factors, especially in a season where Rangers are developing younger strikers.
The Florida Panthers, led by general manager Bill Zito, have also expressed interest. Zito’s desire for aggressive rosters is in line with a potential Kane trade, buoyed by Florida’s solid start in the competitive Atlantic Division.
The Detroit Red Wings stand out with their abundant cap space, a rarity in the NHL landscape. Kane could potentially fit in here, but the decision will depend on whether he believes the Red Wings are on the brink of contention, and that aligns with his goals in his 17th season. Kane’s former linemate Alex DeBrincat and the Red Wings’ potentially surprising playoff goals make this an intriguing possibility.
The Buffalo Sabers offer a unique proposition based on Kane’s ties to the city where he was born and raised. Lack’s flexibility and personal connections within the organization, including head coach Don Granato and general manager Kevyn Adams, make a compelling case for Buffalo.
The maple leaves are far away
Finally, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a long way to go. Johnston claims that despite their limited size and established right-back formation, Kane’s pairing with American Auston Matthews cannot be overlooked. He points out that based on Matthews’ admiration for Kane, it could get interesting.
Kane has a big decision to make and some teams will probably wait for his decision. As the season progresses and teams begin to gain or lose momentum, their interest in him may change as well.
