Red Sox Trade Rumors: Boston Eyed Yankees Star Last Season

Last season, the Red Sox reportedly looked at their fiercest rival as a potential source of reinforcements.
According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, Gleyber Torres was a trade target for Boston last summer, citing “top league sources.” The Red Sox did nothing for Torres before the Major League Baseball deadline, but the club has reportedly been allowed to “return” to discussions with the New York Yankees about the two-time All-Star.
“Some in the Red Sox organization view Torres as an excellent shortstop who would provide the kind of stability at second base that the team has lacked in 2023,” Bradford wrote in a Thursday morning column.
Torres is entering his final year of arbitration, so the Yankees could theoretically consider trading him to avoid potentially losing the 26-year-old after the 2024 season. Coming off a season in which he set career highs in games played (158) and hits (163), Torres will earn $14.6 million this Sunday, according to Spotrac.
Boston could use an upgrade at second base. Currently, the choices of the club to start the season are Luis Urías, Pablo Reyes, Enmanuel Valdez and Ceddanne Rafaela. Pairing Torres with Trevor Story would give the Red Sox a dynamic middle infield, but the Bronx Bombers might not help their longtime nemesis.
Fortunately for Boston, there are other viable options if the franchise is looking to bolster its interior depth.
