Worcester Red Sox up for sale; ‘It’s time,’ Larry Lucchino says
The Worcester Red Sox are currently being put up for sale, as stated by principal owner and chairman Larry Lucchino on the UnAnchored Boston podcast.
I am currently 78 years old. After more than 40 years, I think it’s time to sell the team and enjoy a well-deserved retirement,” Lucchino shared with co-hosts Bob Lobel and Mike Lynch.
In 2015, Lucchino was the leader of the group that purchased the Pawtucket Red Sox. He was still in the role of president and CEO of the Boston Red Sox at that time.
In August 2018, he officially announced that the club would be moving from Pawtucket to Worcester. In 2021, the PawSox transitioned into the WooSox when Polar Park opened for the season.
According to Baseball America, the Worcester Red Sox placed seventh in total attendance for 2023 among all Minor League Baseball teams with 519,651 fans. The Lehigh Valley IronPigs had the highest attendance of 567,322 among all minor league organizations.
Lucchino, a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame, served as the team president for Boston from 2002-2015, during which time the team won three World Series titles in 2004, 2007, and 2013. He currently carries the prestigious titles of president and CEO Emeritus. In 2016, he was honored with induction into the Red Sox’s Hall of Fame, alongside Jason Varitek, Tim Wakefield and Ira Flagstead.
In 1988, he started his lengthy tenure as a baseball executive when he became the president of the Baltimore Orioles.
