Packers Urged to Replace Jordan Love With Rising QB for 2024
The Green Bay Packers are being encouraged to replace Jordan Love with a rising quarterback for the 2024 season.
The Green Bay Packers have noticed improvement in starting quarterback Jordan Love, but there are rumors circulating in the NFL that they may be considering a change next offseason. It is speculated that they could be looking to move up in the 2024 NFL draft to find a new franchise quarterback.
Bleacher Report has identified the quarterback position as a major weakness on the Packers’ current roster after Week 10’s Sunday games. They are recommending that the team consider making a change away from Love in the upcoming NFL draft, suggesting that they might have the courage to move up in the first round to select North Carolina’s Drake Maye.
On November 13, the BR’s NFL staff expressed doubt about Jordan Love’s potential as the future quarterback for the Packers. They suggested that the organization could release him after June 1 in order to recover some of the money owed for next season. “It’s possible that the Cheeseheads would need to trade up to draft Maye, but the Tar Heel could definitely be a valuable pick worth considering.”
The Green Bay Packers, with a record of 3-6, currently hold the No. The Packers might consider other quarterbacks in the first round, but they would probably have to trade up or risk missing out on one of the top two prospects in the class.
Jordan Love’s long-term future remains uncertain.
Valid questions exist about Love’s long-term future with the Packers. Throughout the tumultuous 2023 campaign, he has demonstrated signs of improvement, yet there have been several occasions where his decision-making and accuracy have caused trouble for the team.
Love has only completed 58.7% of his passes (176 of 300) in nine starts during the 2023 season, placing him at the bottom among quarterbacks who have participated in at least six games. Although he has thrown 12 touchdown passes, he has also thrown 10 interceptions, tying with New England’s Mac Jones, despite playing one less game than him.
Love cannot be held responsible for all of the mishaps and shortcomings in Green Bay. After their first game against Chicago, he also suffered the blow of losing his All-Pro blindside blocker, David Bakhtiari, to a season-ending knee injury.
Though the Packers had hoped for quicker success, they let Love sit and learn behind four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers for the first three seasons of his NFL career. During the offseason, they extended his contract to keep him with the team until 2024. However, if the 2023 season ends poorly, the general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers’ management might consider a different direction for the following year.
It is possible that the Packers may choose to focus on a quarterback with their first pick in the 2024 draft. However, their commitment to developing Love in the long run indicates that they may be willing to give him another year to demonstrate his abilities. In that scenario, it would be best for them to invest their 2024 first-round pick in improving Love’s supporting team, such as acquiring a top wide receiver or one of the best offensive tackles in the class to fill in for Bakhtiari.
According to Bleacher Report, the Packers have the option to save money by designating Love as a post-June 1 cut during the upcoming offseason. However, this move would only result in a saving of approximately $500,000 against the 2024 salary cap, while incurring over $7.25 million in dead cap, as per Over the Cap. It’s difficult to believe that Gutekunst would be willing to pay such a steep price to part ways with his chosen quarterback, especially if the 2023 season falls well short of the initial expectations.
