At Marco Simone in October, McIlroy helped lead Europe to a dominant 16.5-11.5 victory over their American rivals. However, in typical Ryder Cup fashion, the victory was not without drama. Off the course, Group USA ended up entangled in debate, after a Sky Sports report recommended Cantlay had driven a ‘split’ inside the storage space.

According to the report, the American refused to wear a cap while competing out of protest because he was dissatisfied with not being compensated to participate in the Ryder Cup.

Midway through day two, just before Cantlay was scheduled to face McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Wyndham Clark in the afternoon fourballs, the news about “capgate” broke. Cantlay’s American teammates, eager to get their own back, waved their caps in an ironic celebration, and his caddie, LaCava, joined them.

LaCava before long exceeded the imprint however, coordinating his festival towards McIlroy, who actually had a putt to tie the match, as did his accomplice Fitzpatrick. The Northern Irishman expressed his emotions after both Europeans failed to land.

He traded warmed words with LaCava, prior to conflicting with Justin Thomas’ caddie Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay minutes after the fact in the vehicle leave. Further subtleties have now arisen about the conflict, which will most likely have made LaCava’s festival even more disappointing for McIlroy.
