Almost Done Deal: Duke set to announce transferring of super talent to duke.
Texas QB Maalik Murphy transferred to Duke, replacing Riley Leonard and Manny Diaz.
Former Texas quarterback Malik Murphy is transferring to Duke, he announced Saturday on social media. Murphy, the no. 20 overall prospect and the quarterback at 247Sports Transfer Rank decided to leave the Longhorns after two seasons. He will be part of the Blue Devils team for three years. Murphy is signed with Texas through 2022 and will spend his first season buried on the depth chart behind starters Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card, who transferred to Purdue in the offseason. Murphy redshirted his freshman year and will enter this season at Texas wearing No. 039.
Despite the addition of five-star freshman Arch Manning, ranked No. 1 in Top247’s 2023 class, the addition will continue. Murphy won his first two career starts late in the 2023 campaign when Ewers was out with an injury. Murphy completed 35 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Longhorns to 2-0 records against BYU and Kansas State. He struggled with turnovers, threw three interceptions, and despite the win, completed just 51.4% of his passes against the Wildcats.
Murphy is the second player to transfer to Duke since coach Manny Diazand was hired last December, joining former Penn quarterback Will Seiler. In terms of importance, it’s hard to beat the addition of Murphy. What Murphy brings to Duke Upside is the name of the game with Murphy. He has little game experience with just seven appearances and few meaningful snaps, and what he shows right away on the field is inconsistent. He was incredible against BYU, but Texas took him back and didn’t put too much pressure on his shoulders. He completed 64% of his passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He had more yards than against Kanas State (248), but more responsibility given the competitive nature of that game.
The collapse of the solution fell off a cliff. He attempted 12 more passes against the Wildcats, but completed three more than against BYU. Just one touchdown and two interceptions. But the power is clear. Murphy has an unusual frame at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, which is difficult to bring to the floor. He has a gun for an arm and uses that height as an advantage to generate more velocity when pitching, making it easier to hit deep balls without letting the ball hang in the air for too long. If he can fine-tune his accuracy and improve his decision-making (both of which will improve with practice and seats to live games), he could become one of the best quarterbacks to come out of Duke in at least a few years. Duke is an option Murphy explained that he will continue to play wherever he enters the lobby, but the fourth room of the Duke End is intact. The Blue Devils lost Riley Leonard to Notre Dame, but with three shooters and decent starting experience (not counting other frontcourt entries) there are still plenty of points to go. Redshirt freshman Henry Belin IV started one game in 2023 with Leonard’s ankle injury, led the Blue Devils to a win over NC State and scored two touchdowns on just four completions. Freshman Grayson Loftis is out for the season, Belin dealt with his own injuries and Leonard was essentially out for the rest of the season in the loss to Louisville. Loftis led the Blue Devils to a 2-2 record in their last four games while earning a bowl berth while throwing for 707 yards and eight touchdowns against just three interceptions through the air. Murphy could be the starter, but Duke will have some competence in the off-season.
