Jets coach sends clear messsage to Zach Wilson
“If he plays that way we’re going to win a lot of football games.”
Earlier this week, the New York Jets made waves by adding veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian, with many assuming that he would take over for current starting quarterback Zach Wilson who has struggled this year after replacing Aaron Rodgers. But with the way Wilson played against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, that assumption might now be in question.
Zach Wilson had a strong performance in the team’s loss to the Chiefs on Sunday night, going 28 for 39 through the air for 245 yards and two touchdowns – numbers that were actually noticeably better than Patrick Mahomes on the same night. And as Jets head coach Robert Saleh points out, if Wilson can play like that going forward, the Jets have a chance with him at quarterback.
“He was letting it rip. I thought he did a really, really nice job,” Saleh said according to Pro Football Talk. “I’m happy for him to go out and show that he does belong, that he can play in this league. If he plays that way we’re going to win a lot of football games.”
The Jets still lost and Wilson put the blame on himself for a late-game fumble, but he certainly played well enough to keep the team in the game on Sunday night. We’ll have to see if he can perform at that level consistently.
