Maple Leafs Gauging Market On Cost-Effective Top-6 Winger
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Quarter wrote in a recent Here and There article: βWith just six games remaining, the Toronto Maple Leafs could have a potential target on the way.
In June.
“The team has identified a future market for a cost-effective top-six player.”
Pagnotta did not elaborate on whether the winger could be acquired as a free agent or via trade, but the most likely option would be via trade.
With virtually nothing to do, it is highly unlikely that a player will sign without moving to another roster.
Part of the problem may be forward Tyler Bertuzzi’s slow start. With one goal and one assist this season, Bertuzzi’s lack of connection with his teammates is causing some concern for the Maple Leafs’ top six.
After a minor injury, Bertuzzi got off to a slow start and John Tavares scored an impressive 10 points, highlighting the difference between the Leafs’ primary forwards.
There’s not much on the market that the Maple Leafs could afford.
Conor Garland could be acquired from Vancouver, while Anthony Manta is expected to be acquired from the capital. The Flyers have several players on their roster and the Montreal Canadiens have so many injuries that it could only be a matter of time before they are interested in some of their forwards.
Striker Joel Armia has been called up and could be traded.
The Maple Leafs need to make a salary settlement.
However, the Leafs are getting paid and spending money.
The team’s defense is a little questionable as to who they will trade, but you would think the blue line would improve if they traded there.
Regular is an interesting term.
That assumes Toronto can find someone who is not only better than what they have, but can help with a lower salary cap.
This is easier said than done.
