Indianapolis Colts Should Trade For Former Pro Bowl Quarterback

Indianapolis Colts Should Trade For Former Pro Bowl Quarterback

It is not yet known if the Indianapolis Colts will make a move before the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
One move they should consider is trading Teddy Bridgewater from the Detroit Lions.
CBSSports.com’s Jordan Dajani wrote a piece on the top players at each position who could be traded before the deadline.
The only quarterback he mentioned was Bridgewater, currently Jared Goff’s backup in Detroit.

“The Lions have a lot of defenders. Jared Goff is the starter, David Blow is on the practice squad and rookie third-round pick Hendon Hooker is on the NFI list.
I think it might be released soon.
Journeyman could be Bridgewater if a team is interested.

There is no indication the Lions want to move Bridgewater.
But if he’s available, Indianapolis should trade him.
The veteran signal caller could be an excellent backup to rookie Gardner Minshew this season.

The Indianapolis Colts need to trade Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater’s career to date

Bridgewater is the epitome of a skilled backup quarterback.
The former Louisville Cardinal is now on his seventh NFL team.
In addition to the Lions, he also played for the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins.
The Vikings selected Bridgewater in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.
He led Minnesota to the NFC North Division title and made the Pro Bowl in his second season. A serious foot injury forced Bridgewater to miss the entire 2016 campaign.
The Miami, Fla. native appeared in just one game the following season.
Bridgewater signed with the Jets in 2018 and has since bounced around from team to team. He played for his hometown Dolphins last season, starting two games in place of the injured Tua Tagovailoa.
He has not played a single game for the Lions so far this year.

Why should the Colts trade him?

Quarterback Anthony Richardson, drafted fourth overall by the Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft, has been interesting to watch when healthy.
Unfortunately, he suffered a shoulder injury in the week 5 win against the Tennessee Titans and will miss the rest of the season. Minshew is now the Colts’ starting pitcher. Sam Ehlinger serves as the primary backup and former Texas A&M star Kellen Mond is on the practice squad.

The Colts are currently 3-4 and just one game out of the final AFC wild card spot.
We need to stay competitive throughout the season with Minshew at center.
He might be the best backup quarterback in the league. However, if he gets injured, the team could face major difficulties.

Neither Ehlinger nor Mond have experience.
Ehlinger struggled in his three starts last year, while Mond only attempted three times in the regular season.

That’s why it makes sense to bring in Bridgewater. He started 65 of his 79 career games and was a former Pro Bowler.
Plus, he’s on a one-year deal, which means the Colts won’t be in financial trouble if things don’t work out after this season.
