Colts release official reasons why the was no Moves at NFL Trade Deadline
The Indianapolis Colts were quiet at the trade deadline for a reason.
As expected, the Indianapolis Colts made no moves at Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.
There have been rumors of several players the Colts may be interested in, as well as rumors that some Colts may be headed elsewhere.
But in the end, the Colts stuck with their current roster.
Some fans are already calling for his spot after general manager Chris Ballard decided not to take action. You can’t blame fans for wanting to make moves to improve their favorite team.
That’s what makes them fans.
But fans have to recognize the current state of this Colts team.
Strip away the emotion and understand why the Colts aren’t aggressive at the deadline.
First, let’s take a look at the Colts’ current situation. Indy is in last place in the AFC South with 3 wins and 5 losses and is on a 3 game losing streak.
They also will be without starting quarterback Anthony Richardson for the rest of the season after the rookie underwent season-ending surgery last week for a sprained AC ligament in his throwing shoulder.
The season looked promising when Richardson was available, but the Colts fell back into the dirt.
Currently, this team is more likely to miss the playoffs than compete for a playoff spot.
Now, if you look at almost every team that has made recent moves to draft players, they are all teams that are either close to the playoffs or could advance to the Super Bowl.
Here’s a list of the top deals made before the deadline:
With the exception of the Bears and Vikings, every team that signed the player is at or near the top of their division. The steps taken will help build the team’s momentum this season.
I’m in win mode now.
The Colts, on the other hand, are not in winning mode right now.
The team is going through a slight rebuild.
Even if Richardson is healthy, it will be difficult for the Colts to make much noise with the loaded AFC.
Most of the players mentioned above are in the last year of their contracts, so there is no guarantee that they will stay with this team for long.
Ballard won’t turn down a one-year capital rental if the team isn’t ready to compete.
But the Colts can’t sign these players to long-term contracts?
There’s always room, but the Colts have key players they’d like to keep in the final year of their contracts. Michael Pittman Jr., Grover Stewart and Kenny Moore II are just three players in the final year of their contracts that Indy could sign to extensions.
Combine these three and your money will disappear quickly.
The Colts’ game plan isn’t about the 2023 season.
Ballard and the Colts front office showed that with the way they approached the 2023 season. The Colts played with Richardson and head coach Shane Steichen this offseason to see who would fill the role going forward. The organization considered 2024, 2025 and beyond.
So if you haven’t already, it’s time to adjust your expectations as a Colts fan.
Watch your young players develop and mature throughout the remainder of the 2023 season.
Stay tuned for the next generation of players appearing on this list. Richardson, Josh Downs, Bernhard Reimann, Drew Ogletree, Sweetie Pye and JuJu Brents are some of the names that have shown great promise this season.
Most importantly, we look forward to competitive games for the rest of the year.
There are many good days ahead for this team and the Colts could make a move that could push them over the top.
That won’t happen this year.
