Ice hockey star Adam Johnson’s family speak out on “reckless” tackle amid police investigation

The family of Adam Johnson have called for a full investigation into the death of the ice hockey star, who tragically passed away last weekend.
Johnson, 29, died after colliding with an opposing player during a match between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers.
After Johnson’s death was announced, both clubs and the British Ice Hockey League called the incident a “tragic accident”.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that investigations were continuing.
Johnson’s grieving aunt, Kari Johnson, spoke out about the incident and hopes ice hockey has learned a lesson.
“He was very careless. I just hope I’m okay. We seek justice for Adam.
“We are calling for a full investigation,” he said.
“I watched the match live and saw what happened.
Terrible is the word that describes it. I just hope I’m okay.
It won’t bring my cousin back.
We want to make sure they’re right.
“He was a really wonderful young man.
He loved everyone and was kind to everyone. He was generous.
He was a great kid.
“We knew what a great kid Adam was, but now we’re discovering how many lives he’s had since his death.”
South Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident.
Police said the investigation could take some time as investigators review video and speak with witnesses.
A spokesman said: “Investigations are continuing into the death of a player following the match between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield on Saturday 28 October.
“Since Saturday, detectives have carried out a range of inquiries including viewing footage, speaking to witnesses and seeking advice and support from highly specialized experts to understand what happened.
“We have also been working closely with Sheffield City Council’s Health and Safety Department who are supporting our investigation.
As with all unexpected deaths, it is standard practice for the police to fully investigate the circumstances and report their findings to the coroner.
“Our officers have now left the scene, but due to the complex nature of this tragic and unprecedented incident, a full investigation is likely to take.
He continued: “As we continue to investigate and provide updates as needed, we sincerely ask that you refrain from making speculative assumptions, including on social media.” “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims.”
