Jon Rahm breaks silence after quitting Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s golf league
The withdrawal of Jon Rahm, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy from the TGL Golf League was confirmed on Thursday, with the Spaniard explaining the reasons for his decision.
John Rahm admits Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ future golf league will not provide the level of commitment needed to compete in the TGL.
Lam’s decision to withdraw from the race was announced on Thursday after speculation about his future intensified after he was removed from the district’s website.
The Masters champion explained his decision on Twitter, admitting he was “sad” not to compete in his first season on the tour.
The Spanish star wrote: “We regret to confirm that we will not be participating in the first season of TGL. I still think this is a great opportunity, but it requires a level of commitment that we cannot provide at this time.
Good luck to all participants.
May the best team win!”
Rahm’s comments came an hour after a TGL spokesman confirmed his decision to leave.
The league’s statement, obtained by Mirror Sport, said: “John is one of the most talented players in the game and we will miss him in his first season in the TGL. We understand that players have to balance many different aspects of their professional lives.
Find that balance… and respect your staff.
John’s life and choices and I wish him the best. TGL will soon name new players to complete the 24 player roster.”
Lahm was one of the first names added to the innovative league’s roster after it was announced last November.
Since then, many PGA Tour stars have been confirmed, including Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler and Colin Morikawa, with founders Woods and McIlroy also entering the competition.
The TGL roster was rounded out last month with the additions of Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clarke, Kevin Kisner, Min Woo Lee and Lucas Glover.
Two months before launch, Woods and McIlroy have yet to add a player to the league following the departure of one of their marquee players.
Many PGA Tour stars have yet to commit to the TGL, including world No. 1 Scotty Scheffler, Victor Hovland and Jordan Spieth.
Just days before Lahm decided to retire, the league officially unveiled the format and rules for its inaugural season, which begins on June 9.
24 players are divided into 6 different teams and compete against each other in “modern match game” battles over a 15-week season.
The event will be held off the golf course with all competition under one roof at the custom built SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens.
Players compete in front of a state-of-the-art golf simulator, clearing grass courses, fairways, bumpy bunkers and sand.
Fifty yards from the hole, they focus on the putting green, which is used for both chipping and putting in front of a crowd of 1,600. TGL confirmed that Rahm’s replacement would be announced “soon.”
