Colorado’s Deion Sanders Hands Offensive Play-Calling Duties to Pat Shurmur, per Report

It has been reported that Colorado State’s Deion Sanders will turn over the offensive duties to Pat Schumer.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders shook up his coaching staff ahead of the Buffaloes’ game against then-No. 16 from Oregon State on Saturday.

According to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, Sanders stripped offensive coordinator Sean Lewis of his play-calling duties and asked quality control analyst Pat Shurmur to call the Beavers. McMurphy added that Lewis is still expected to signal from the outside, but Shurmur will be the one leading the way.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Shurmur and Lewis will share the co-offensive coordinator title.
Shurmur is a longtime NFL coach who was once the head coach of the Browns and Giants.
His career head coaching record (including one week as the Eagles’ interim head coach) is 19 wins and 46 losses. His last NFL job was as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2020-21. He was hired by Sanders this season.
Lewis left his head coaching job at Kent State to become Sanders’ offensive coordinator and hasn’t done much in the Buffaloes’ first eight games to show that such a move could happen. Colorado (4-4, 1-4 Pac-12) has scored at least 40 points in four games this season and ranks 39th in the FBS with 32.1 points per game.
But the Buffs had just one touchdown and 242 yards in last week’s 28-16 loss at UCLA.

Under NCAA rules regarding the size of coaching staffs, Sanders would have to demote one of his assistants and name Shurmur as the full-time coach to be eligible to coach this weekend’s game.
