CBS Sports gives the Colts a midseason B grade

The Colts earned a good average grade for the conditions, but are still learning to do.
Indianapolis Colts

Record: 4-5

Grade: B

Shane Steichen’s impact was felt in his first year in Indianapolis, even after losing franchise quarterback Anthony Richardson for the season. The Colts are the only team to score 20-plus points in every game this year and rank seventh in the league in scoring per game. They figured out Jonathan Taylor’s situation and the running game is clicking with him and Zack Moss.
Gus Bradley’s defense hasn’t been great (25th in points per possession), but the Colts take care of the teams they face on the schedule. They also have a win over the Ravens on the road, which is the meet of the year.
This season could have been a disaster if Richardson went down. This is not.
Despite the loss, the Colts had two outstanding late defensive calls against the Cleveland Browns. They’ve scored at least 20 points in each of nine games, despite having guard Gardner Minshew five times so far this season (and missing star guard Jonathan Taylor for four games). The defense has been up and down, but as Kenny Moore II showed last week when he had two picks in the Colts’ win, it has some really good players who can make plays.
The Colts won in overtime on the road against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3, and although rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans are considered the rising darlings of the division, let’s not forget that Indy already beat them on the road in Week 2.
For the Colts, you have to be pretty happy with this side’s mark while accepting that the team still has a lot of work to do and has yet to consistently play its best football.
Still, it’s possible the Colts fall into the AFC wild-card race with a strong second half — thanks to a soft remaining schedule.
