The Red Sox are willing to trade an outfielder to improve other areas of the roster

Simply put, the Red Sox have a lot of left-handed hitting outfielders and not a lot of right-handed hitting outfielders.
Baseball manager Craig Breslow wants to trade a large number of left-handed hitters to help fill other roster needs. Of course, Breslow also needs to acquire a right fielder – either via trade or free agency – to make the infield group more balanced.
“I think (it’s) exciting to see some young outfielders come up, maybe a bunch of left-handed outfielders,” Breslow said. – But quite good players who participated in the major league victories. So I think we’re trying to figure out who are the guys that can be part of the core in the future, who are the ones that we can maybe mold into pieces that help fill the voids in other areas.

That’s one way of saying the Red Sox are willing to trade a left-handed hitting outfielder to improve other areas of the roster. Breslow made the start a priority. He also said the Red Sox plan to add a right-handed hitter and a center fielder.
Alex Verdugo, Masataka Yoshida, Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu are all left-handed. Boston has only two right-handed hitting outfielders, Ceddanne Rafaela and Rob Refsnyder, and Adam Duvall will be a free agent. Refsnyder is the backup and Rafaela showed in September that he may not be ready for a big role early in the season due to chasing problems.
Boston first baseman Roman Anthony — a center fielder who plans to play for Double-A Portland in 2023 — also bats from left.
There are several interesting right-handed hitters on the free agent market, including Jorge Soler, Lourdes Gurriel Jr, Teoscar Hernández and Rhys Hoskins. Boston could also re-sign Duvall.

Verdugo can hit free agency after the 2024 season, making him a potential trade candidate.
“His fit is an everyday righty who plays Gold Glove caliber defense and can make an impact on the offensive side of the ball,” Breslow said. “We spoke to him. He seems committed to performing as well as possible. He’s obviously a guy that other teams have taken on because of the situation. But I don’t think there’s anything we can do.
“We have to look at every opportunity and every interaction with another club or (agent) as an opportunity to improve the team and where it will go remains to be seen.”

Breslow said he’s comfortable making trade decisions now, even though he’s only been with the organization two weeks and still has to learn his players, which teams can ask for during trade talks. “The reality is that trades are made with incomplete and incomplete information, even though I’ve been here 10 years,” Breslow said. “There is anticipation and anticipation. There is cooperation between many people in several departments. But I did my best to move as quickly as possible, because there are others in the organization who know our internal players. But I feel comfortable filling in. when we have the right opportunity in mind.”
