Legendary hockey voice Don Cherry became a controversial figure in later life, and the controversy for which he is best known ended with him losing his job on Hockey Night in Canada.


On November 9, 2019, Cherry appeared on the television show Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada where he berated Canadians who did not buy poppies on Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day. and Veterans Day. While Cherry’s remarks may not have been made in the most eloquent way, his message was a clear attempt to support veterans on Nov. 11, as he has done throughout his career. Cherry also knelt at the gravestone of Canadian artilleryman Thomas William MacKenzie. He was killed in action just 7 days before the end of World War I hostilities. Cherry then reminds everyone how important it is to support veterans.
