Family reacts as police make manslaughter arrests in connection with Adam Johnson’s hockey death.
South Yorkshire Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder following an investigation into the death of ice hockey star Adam Johnson, who was injured during a Challenge Cup match last month.
Adam Johnson’s family has spoken out against the man charged with murder over his death.
Johnson suffered serious injuries following a collision on the ice with Matt Petgrave while playing for Nottingham Panthers in their Challenge Cup match against Sheffield Steelers last month.
The death of the American was confirmed at a nearby hospital.
He was only 29 years old.
South Yorkshire Police have now confirmed his arrest.
“Our investigation began immediately after this tragic incident and we have since carried out extensive inquiries to piece together the events that led to Adam’s disappearance in unprecedented circumstances.” Detective Constable Bex Horsfall said:
“We have spoken to highly specialized experts in the field to support our investigation and work closely with Sheffield City Health and Safety Board who are supporting our ongoing inquiries.
Adam’s death has shocked many in the community, from local Sheffield residents to hockey fans around the world.
“We know these communities expect this investigation to be handled with the same professionalism, fairness and sensitivity as any other investigation, and we also ask the public to refrain from making comments or assumptions that could undermine this process.
“As the investigation continues, our thoughts are with everyone affected by this devastating incident.”
Johnson’s aunt, Kari, said after his arrest: Whatever they decide, I’m going to have to live with it.

Johnson was recently laid to rest in his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota, where his family paid tribute to the 29-year-old with an emotional obituary.

“He enjoyed working in the yard, fishing, golfing with friends, playing ice hockey tournaments, working on projects around the house, reading, watching the stock market and listening to his favorite music.
Adam especially enjoyed having coffee with his fiancé Ryan.
They spend the morning together dreaming about the future.
