Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ LIV Golf rival has suffered the worst possible start!
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s golf tournament got off to a scary start when the roof of the stadium collapsed.
Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods hope to bring golf to a new audience with TGL, but the project suffered a major setback on Wednesday when a power outage damaged the under-construction stadium.
TGL, the skill-based golf league led by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, suffered a major setback ahead of its launch next year when its stadium was damaged during construction in Florida.
Palm Beach Gardens’ SoFi Center will host the new league, but the dome that was supposed to be part of the stadium collapsed Wednesday morning.
According to local media WPBF, the damage was limited, with the dome collapsing and cracking due to a fault in the temporary electrical system used on the site. No one was injured.
The TGL launches in January, with 24 of the world’s best golfers (but not LIV members) competing in televised team competitions in a series of weekly events using simulators and new technology. However, it is unclear whether the damage to the dome will force the league to postpone its first event, scheduled for January 9.
TGL’s TMRW Sports said: “Our crews have further secured the dome area and will continue to work to resolve the situation.”
Mirror Sport has contacted TMRW Sports for comment on the damage and how it could affect the start of the race.
The SoFi Center has been under construction on the Palm Beach State College campus since February, with the first event scheduled to take place in two months. The stadium can hold 2,000 people and fans can watch the players hit the toys on the simulator and approach their shots.
Players enter the “Green Zone” 50 meters from the tee, featuring three dynamic courts the size of four basketball courts and under-floor technology that can change the look and undulation from hole to hole.
Players complete a 15-hole match format consisting of triples and singles.
TGL is made up of six teams of four and events are held on Tuesday evenings in January and February.
The brands of four teams, including Atlanta Drive, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links and LAGC, have been revealed, and teams representing New York and San Francisco will also be announced soon.
