Lewis Hamilton jealous of F1 rivals as Toto Wolff left baffled at Las Vegas GP
George Russell flew the flag for Mercedes and Great Britain, securing third place on the grid at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, while Lewis Hamilton endured another poor qualifying session.
Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff want Mercedes to have the same single-lap speed that Ferrari can show again at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion barely made it into the top 10, failing to advance even in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Ferrari again showed their qualifying prowess, only beating Max Verstappen into third for both drivers.
Carlos Sainz was second in the standings, but a grid penalty dropped him 10 places.
This means that Hamilton will start the race in 10th place, meaning he still has plenty of room to overtake.
Hamilton made it clear that he is counting the days until the end of this season.
Again, he gave the impression of indifference when it came to the audition.
“It’s not very good.
“Yesterday we did a bit better and looked relatively competitive,” he said.
“I changed a few things overnight.
FP3 was so bad that it set me back and I tried to come back in qualifying but it never happened.
“I held on, but the car wasn’t working. And if you don’t even make it to the second trimester, it’s definitely going to be hard.”Same as mine.
“First of all, when it comes to the texture of the cars and the tires, we had big textures like everyone else. We were a bit behind in FP3 so I think the key will be how we manage it and progress and not push ourselves to where we are tomorrow.
But seeing a Ferrari today is pretty impressive.
It’s a fast car!”
It wasn’t bad at all for Mercedes in qualifying.
Despite Hamilton’s difficulties, George Russell benefited from keeping the tires at much better temperatures.
He was quick enough to not only qualify for Q3 but secure third place.
Asked about the differences between the drivers, team boss Wolff said: “It’s still a mystery.
You can see the difference if you have a tire on the right window. We saw this in the third free exercise.
It is very difficult to understand.
“I think the difference in temperature between what we actually hold and what we don’t hold is about 4 to 5 degrees.
You can see that there is a team called McLarens that leads in the first quarter and then drops out.
“Ferrari, on the other hand, is setting an amazing lap.
Both are half a second ahead of the others.”
