New Browns QB Joe Flacco explains he was “very surprised” there was no interest during the 2023 season.
Joe Flacco has not returned to an NFL team after joining the Browns’ practice squad this week. The 38-year-old quarterback could soon earn Cleveland’s starting job depending on how he plays with Deshaun Watson the rest of the year. However, Flacco acknowledged Wednesday that he expects to join the team much earlier than November.
He told reporters there is a lack of interest in the NFL. “I’m proud of myself.” “I think I was very impressed, at least in the beginning or middle of the season. But as the season goes on, I think that surprise will turn into something else and I won’t be surprised anymore. He continued: “This is my 16th year. And you’ve seen a million things, so if you see something surprising, you’re probably in the wrong place. Now I have something to surprise you.”
Are you surprised Flacco has been without a team this long? may be. Although he’s approaching 39 years old and hasn’t been a full-time starter since 2018, the former Super Bowl champion has 180 career wins to his name. However, he had mixed results during his backup tight end, going just 3-14 in his last 17 games as QB1. Flacco is best known for his 11-year career with the Ravens, but most recently served as the Jets’ backup under center in 2022 to replace the injured Zach Wilson. Rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson will make his second straight start for the Browns in Week 12 against the Broncos, but Cleveland has been busy replacing Watson and signing a veteran No. 2 this year. Walker was replaced. It stands to reason that Flacco will have an opportunity to lead the Browns’ offense before the end of the 2023 campaign.
