Derek Barnett claimed by Texans after being waived by Eagles

Philadelphia’s 2017 first-round pick has a new home in the NFL.

Derek Barnett has officially been claimed by the Houston Texans after being waived by the Philadelphia Eagles late last week. Texas ranks 17th in waivers (currently coinciding with the 2024 NFL Draft), so 16 teams have claimed him.

In Houston, Barnett will be reunited with former Eagles coach Matt Burke, who will serve as defensive coordinator for DeMeco Ryans. Barnett and Burke have re-signed with Philly for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Former Eagles assistants Corey Undlin and Dino Vasso are also on the Texans’ coaching staff. Barnett will get a much-needed fresh start in his new NFL home. It will be interesting to see what happens with the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Or maybe not who he was for the Eagles at the end of his tenure in Philadelphia.

Barnett will have the opportunity to play six games with the Texans (or more if they make the playoffs) before becoming a free agent who can sign with any team this offseason.
