Would reunion with Eagles make sense?

The Cardinals released TE Zach Ertz. Does it make sense to reunite with the Eagles? The Arizona Cardinals released veteran tight end Zack Ertz on Thursday, potentially clearing the way for him to reunite with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Ertz, a three-time Pro Bowl selection with the Eagles, has been benched the past five games with a quadriceps injury. Ertz remains on waivers and will become a free agent once he is waived.

Ertz, 33, spent the first 7 1/2 seasons of his career with the Birds, winning a Super Bowl in 2017. He was traded to the Cardinals in 2021 and played well, recording 56 catches for 574 yards and three touchdowns in just 11 games.

Last season, Ertz had 69 catches for 406 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games before suffering a torn ACL. He returned this season and had 27 catches for 187 yards and a touchdown in seven games.

Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert suffered a broken wrist in Week 9 against the Cowboys. Goedert is close to returning and could play Sunday, but the injury could give Ertz a chance to return to Philly.

The Birds are without Grant Calcaterra due to injury, leaving Jack Stoll and Albert Okwuegbunam as their only TEs.

Ertz must clear waivers before a possible reunion with the Eagles can be considered. Former Cardinals teammate J.J. Watt was the first to announce Ertz’s release, saying on social media that he “plans to reconcile with the player and run for his second Super Bowl ring.”

The Cardinals confirmed Ertz’s release shortly thereafter.

Getting Ertz off the books clears the way for the fast-rising Trey McBride to assume the starting role.
