OFFICIAL DECISION: Steelers projected to sign Wilson?
Russell Wilson’s days with the Denver Broncos could soon be coming to an end, and that means he will look for a new team soon.
As a quarterback-needy team, the Pittsburgh Steelers could be in the market for Wilson. In fact, CBS Sports writer Cody Benjamin projects that Wilson will sign a three-year, $90 million contract with the Steelers in the offseason.
As the highly compensated face of the team, the former Seahawks great was always going to require an MVP-caliber comeback to win over new coach Sean Payton. He wasn’t horrible in 2023, but his stats also covered for a general lack of consistency and slowness in leading the Broncos attack, up until his controversial dismissal in Week 17, which essentially ended his brief tenure in Denver. Wilson is obviously no longer the great dual threat he once was at the age of 35. However, he showed signs of improvement in 2023, and with Denver having already paid his 2024 contract, he should have a respectable market upon his eventual departure.
In his second season with the Broncos, Wilson, 35, passed for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He was expected to have his finest season since 2020 when he was benched before Week 17.
The Steelers may have strong desires to acquire a veteran quarterback this winter, but it would be foolish and risky to let go of Kenny Pickett after just two seasons. Does Wilson justify the cost? The Steelers have the last say on that.
