Nick Mullens, the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, sobbed at the news conference after the team lost to the Detroit Lions in the season finale.
After Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, the backup quarterbacks were left to lead the team. Mullens was in the driver’s seat during the Vikings’ turbulent season, which began with a 1-4 record but saw them string together five straight wins to set themselves up for a postseason chase that ended with a 30-20 loss to Detroit on January 7.
Mullens was at times speechless as he reflected on the highs and lows of the season, perfectly capturing the intensity of what his squad had endured.
“The ride has been quite the up-and-down. I adore the Vikings. I adore the group. When your team’s starter is hurt, you would want to enter the game and claim, “Our quarterbacks got us to the playoffs.” That is our desired outcome. Sorry, I didn’t get it done,” Mullens said, stumbling over his words as he realized the 2023 season was over. It’s awful. But the season was enjoyable. You experience a lot and learn a lot.
When asked about the source of the feeling, Mullens smiled broadly.
I’m an emotional dude, probably,” he chuckled. “It just sucks. You want to do your best, but it just sucks. You just try to get the job done. We were very close this year, but very close is not good enough in this league.”
Nick Mullens’ Future With Vikings Uncertain
Mullens and the Vikings faced a significant decision this season after they acquired him in a trade to cover Kirk Cousins in the 2022 preseason.
With their stable of backups in Sean Mannion, Jake Browning, and Kelen Mond, the new regime was not happy with them, and the Vikings traded the Raiders to the Las Vegas for a conditional seventh-round selection that season.
Although Mullens’ victory over the Vikings in the preseason effectively sealed the deal, serving as Cousins’ backup has generally been a glamorous position. Until October 29 of this year, the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback had not missed a game due to an injury.
On a two-year contract, Mullens is the top quarterback under contract for next season, although there is a potential out with just $375,000 in dead cap sank if he is cut.

The length of time Mullens started for the Vikings was crucial in deciding his future with the group. Despite having a 0-3 record when starting, he outperformed Josh Dobbs and Karen Hall in terms of productivity. In Week 14, he led the Raiders on a game-winning field goal drive after taking over for Dobbs in relief.
Mullens completed 100 out of 148 pass attempts for 1306 yards, seven touchdowns, and eight interceptions in five games. He’s shown he can be useful by filling in as a backup midway through the game, but his future is still uncertain.
” We were competing in every ball game. You just got to get the job done and control what you can control,” Mullens said. “As a QB, you want guys to want to play for you. Whether I did that or not, I guess I’ll let those guys answer, but it’s a great group.
“I’m proud of the stuff I did put on tape for the most part.”
