Bill Belichick has shown his feelings on Dallas Cowboys as NFL job links emerge
Bill Belichick has not indicated that he is retiring from football after being fired by the New England Patriots, and the Dallas Cowboys could be an attractive option
Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has previously expressed his admiration for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. This comes as speculation grows over whether he might be considered for a coaching role with the Cowboys.
Belichick, 71, is currently without a job in football for the first time this century, but he hasn’t hinted at retiring. With seven teams already looking for new head coaches, the Cowboys could soon join them if they decide to sack Mike McCarthy.
Despite their shock defeat to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round, the Cowboys would still be a highly sought-after job. Among the other teams with vacancies, only the Seattle Seahawks finished the regular season with a winning record.
Belichick has recently spoken positively about the Cowboys. After the Patriots’ heavy defeat in Dallas in Week 4, he singled out owner Jerry Jones for praise and made it clear he has admiration for the franchise.
“I have a ton of respect for Jerry and [director of player personnel Stephen Jones] and the way they run the organization down there,” Belichick said. “They’ve had decades of success. They were really the team of the ’90s with Jimmy [Johnson], and they’ve been good. They’ve been competitive every year, obviously more than competitive. They’ve had a lot of great players down there.”
Former head coach Johnson expressed his disappointment with the Cowboys’ performance on FOX’s halftime show, after they conceded 27 points without reply. Meanwhile, owner Jones was left almost speechless.
“This seems like the most painful (playoff loss) because we all had such great expectations and had hope for this team,” he admitted. “I’m floored. This is beyond my comprehension.”
He added: “Didn’t see that coming at all. If you had told me (before the game) that we had scored 32 points, I would have thought we had won.” When asked about their head coach, he remained tight-lipped. “I haven’t thought one second (about McCarthy’s future),” Jones confessed.
On how much their final game of the season will influence his decision, he said: “I give a lot to today. I’ll give a lot to everything we’ve done. I weigh it a lot of ways”
After the regular season finale, Jones was equally non-committal. “What he’s done, the fact that we put ourselves in this position over the last three years, I think that does speak for itself,” he stated.
“We’ve got a lot of football left, and in no small part, thanks to Mike, thanks to his staff, and thanks to some really outstanding players around here. So we’ll see how each game goes.”
McCarthy has one year left on his contract with Dallas. Despite him being their coach, the Cowboys have only managed to win a single playoff game in four seasons, which was last year’s wild-card round
