Dallas Cowboys warned Bill Belichick would be “match made in hell” in brutal assessment
Bill Belichick is a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching job if it becomes available, but ESPN host Shannon Sharpe does not think he and owner Jerry Jones would work well together
ESPN host Shannon Sharpe has warned that hiring Bill Belichick as the Dallas Cowboys’ next head coach could be a disaster. Belichick, 71, is currently without a job after leaving the New England Patriots and is attracting interest from across the league.
However, Sharpe believes that Belichick’s desire for authority could clash with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. “Can you imagine Jerry Jones trying to hold a press conference and tell (everyone) what’s going on with the team, and you think coach Belichick is going to sit idly by and let Jerry do that? Absolutely not!” he said on ESPN First Take.
“It would be the worst. It’s a match made in hell. You can’t pick a worse match than Jerry Jones and coach Bill Belichick. There’s a reason he got rid of Jimmy (Johnson). He got rid of Bill Parcells. Do you understand?” Sharpe said.
“Coach Belichick learned under Parcells. Jimmy and Coach Parcells and Coach Belichick are more alike, and once he got rid of Parcells, what has he done?
“Hired the Chan Gaileys, hired the Dave Campos (Gailey and Campo both preceded Parcells), hired the Jason Garretts, hired the Mike McCarthys, hired the Wade (Phillips). He don’t want that type of coach (Belichick). He wants to be able to do everything. He wants to be the face of it.”
Sharpe then ranted about Jones being left uncharacteristically speechless after the Packers game before returning to the question: “No, this would be a terrible match, Coach Belichick and Jerry Jones.”
Whether they would work together remains to be seen, but Belichick did not harm his candidacy when praising the franchise during the regular season while still Patriots coach. After New England’s blowout loss in Dallas in Week 4, he singled out Jones in particular.
“I have a ton of respect for Jerry and [director of player personnel Stephen Jones] and the way they run the organization down there,” Belichick said. “They’ve had decades of success. They were really the team of the ’90s with Jimmy [Johnson], and they’ve been good.”
“They’ve been competitive every year, obviously more than competitive. They’ve had a lot of great players down there.” The feeling is mutual, with former Cowboys coach Garrett revealing they are “close” and “good friends” who “really like and respect each other”.
