The Colts could be losing one of their top assistant coaches
With several NFL teams building new coaching staffs, the Indianapolis Colts are at risk of losing one of their key coordinators.
While four teams remain alive in the race for Super Bowl 58, the rest of the league has turned their attention to the offseason. That means coaching changes and roster changes. The Indianapolis Colts are pretty set in the coaching department, with Shane Steichen proving to be the right head coach for Indy. However, the Colts may have to replace one of their other coaches.
After Indy’s season ended, fans were prepared to say goodbye to defensive coordinator Gus Bradley. However, he’s set to return for a third season. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, on the other hand, has a less clear future with Indianapolis.
On Saturday, NFL reporter Mike Garafolo reported that if the offensive coordinator position for the Philadelphia Eagles opens up, Indy’s OC Jim Bob Cooter is a name that could be in play.
Eagles could take Jim Bob Cooter from the Colts
Philadelphia is coming off a disappointing season where it was clear that the team missed the presence of Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon. The Eagles have already fired defensive coordinator Sean Desai and there’s a belief that offensive coordinator Brian Johnson could be next if he doesn’t leave for another job.
That would open up the door for Cooter to go from the Colts to the Eagles, continuing the exchange of coaches between the two franchises. Frank Reich was the offensive coordinator in Philly prior to being head coach in Indianapolis. Nick Sirianni was the offensive coordinator for the Colts prior to being the head coach in Philadelphia. Shane Steichen was the offensive coordinator for the Eagles prior to being the head coach in Indy. Now, Jim Bob Cooter could be going from offensive coordinator for the Colts to offensive coordinator for the Eagles.
While that would technically be a lateral move, the expectation is that Cooter would be the play caller for the Eagles. Shane Steichen handles the offensive play-calling duties in Indianapolis. That’s also why this isn’t a loss that would be considered extremely detrimental. While it would force the Colts to find another offensive coordinator, there will still be comfort knowing that Shane Steichen is still in charge.
