TGL is described as a high-tech pit environment, in which star PGA Tour teams compete over 15 regular matches on real grass and sand combined with custom-sloped greens.
TGL was born after Woods and Rory McIlroy founded TMRW Sports.
This business became a partner of the PGA Tour immediately after the launch ceremony in August 2022.
Yesterday, October 31, TMRW Sports announced the operation of TGL from 2024 with the opening match on January 9.
The opening season will have 15 regular matches, taking place only at the SoFi Center with a total area of about 2.3 hectares in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
In the stadium, the stands area has 1,600 spectators, while the battlefield perimeter is set at 97 x 50 yards, equivalent to an American football field.
At the playing and hole approach stage, all players will play on a 19.4 x 14 meter screen, with the ball on real grass, or even real sand when caught in a trap.
In putting or shots under 50 yards (1 yard = 0.9 meter), TGL golfers will perform in the “green zone” assembled from three arrays, each 353 m2 wide with the ability to customize the slope.
The first TGL season had six round-robin teams, a total of 24 PGA Tour golfers, including Woods and McIlroy. Each team will play five regular legs. Each time the troops depart, there are three members fighting through nine partnership holes and six duel holes.
In the team part, members of each side take turns playing from the beginning until the end of the hole according to the principle that each person must play three times. In the duel, each person can only play two holes. Each hole wins one point, draws do not count.
If the score is equal after 15 standard holes, both sides will move to the “extra match” section, playing close to the flag and choosing the two closest shots to finalize the result. The scoring method on TGL is similar to the NHL professional hockey tournament. That is shown by the fact that the team that wins the standard competition or the extra match gets two points while the team that loses the main competition naturally gets 0 points, but if they lose the match in the extra match, they will get one point.
After completing the regular schedule, the top 4 accumulated points will enter the semi-finals and then find the champion in the final.
TGL has currently identified five teams named after American cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. The support for these teams comes from billionaires or stars in the American sports world, including the Williams sisters.
