Cam Smith drinks booze from shoe as Australians urge him to win LIV Golf Adelaide
Cam Smith has a great chance of winning LIV Golf’s ongoing tournament in Adelaide heading into Sunday’s third and final round – sitting just three shots off the lead
Cam Smith is certainly enjoying himself at LIV Golf’s event in Adelaide – drinking booze from a shoe while appearing on stage during a DJ set on Saturday.
Smith, 30, is probably the best Australian golfer on the planet right now and Adelaide fans will be looking forward to a win on his home turf. The 2022 British Open champion has a good chance of achieving this as he is only three strokes behind leader Brendan Steele. The LIV event in Australia is one of the loudest tournaments on the calendar. On Saturday, a caddy was hit in the head and knocked to the ground after fans threw cups and bottles at the 12th hole, known as the “watering hole.” The party continued after Saturday’s second round with a live performance from superstar DJ Fisher. To the delight of fans, Smith appeared on stage and Fisher handed him a shoeful of beer. He took a drink before accepting the approval of the crowd.
This performance is known as “The Shoe,” and if Smith can win a local competition, he’s sure to enjoy a few extra beers. A former Players champion has yet to win a LIV event in Adelaide, with Taylor Gooch winning the inaugural event last year.
Smith will present an opportunity Sunday. Steele leads the field at 14 under, with Danny Lee trailing by one stroke. Carlos Ortiz and Mito Pereira both play for the under-12s, while Dean Burmester, Patrick Reed, Cameron Tringle and Smith play for the under-11s. Mr Smith was asked about the support he received in Adelaide after Saturday’s tour. He had a mixed reaction, praising his support but hinting at the pressure he was under. “The kind of support we have this week is different than the support we get on any other 51 weekends of the year,” he told reporters. “It’s a completely different feeling. The support is great, but there’s also a lot of pressure to perform.
Smith’s Ripper GC also has a good chance of winning the team title in Adelaide. The team, consisting of Smith, Matt Jones, Marc Leishman and Lucas Herbert, is 33 under par for the tournament, two points behind leaders Torque GC. A Ripper GC win would be a huge favorite as all four members of the team are Australian. Smith added: “I think it’s not just us, but probably all the other Australians who want us to do well and win tomorrow.” It’s a considerable weight on your shoulders, but we are ready. \ “
On the other hand, this style has decided to win his first victory on the Saudi road. He told the journalist after the second round: . ” Obviously there were a lot of birdies, so I think it’s going to be a 20 under par race.
“Personally, I just want to go out and play as freely as possible. I’ve been feeling good the last few days and I think I have a good chance if I can hold out for one more day.
