Fans left disappointed after Tiger Woods cards mediocre round 1 at 2024 PGA Championship
Tiger Woods played the first round of the PGA Championship for a score of 1 over 72. This result ranked him T82, with the day’s play remaining, and Woods will need to go very low in the score on Friday to hope to make the cut.
Woods’ score did not go unnoticed by the fans, who have shared their reactions about the matter. While some are hopeful of a possible recovery for Woods, most believe it’s all over for him.
“Out of it after 1 round. Not surprising, no matter how much media and fans trying to hype the ‘1 more major’ story. If he doesn’t play competitive golf on a regular basis, he has no chance to win a major. Way too much good players for him to even have a sniff,” one fan posted.
“Love Tiger but this is not a surprise at all. Dude has no chance to contend anymore as long as he has to walk courses,” another fan wrote.
“His injuries have changed him from a brilliant player to a good, serviceable player. The media hype still hasn’t caught up with the change, and the media still treats him as if he’s still brilliant,” another fan posted.
“Not good enough. “Missed Cut” is looming,” another fan wrote.
A look at Tiger Woods’ first round at the 2024 PGA Championship
Tiger Woods teed off in the morning wave of the first round of the 2024 PGA Championship. He did so grouped with Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley at 8:14 a.m. (Eastern Time) from the 10th hole.
Tiger Woods made par on the first hole. He birdied the second after he tried to reach the hole with his second shot (from the rough) but went long and fell into a greenside bunker.
He then parred the 3rd and birdied the 4th, making a 17-foot putt. Woods made par on the 5th and bogeyed 6 after not trying to find the green with his second shot from the fairway, then missed a 34-foot putt for par.
Tiger Woods completed the front nine with par on the last three holes to make the turn at 1-over 37. In the back nines, Woods looked better, with two birdies in the first six holes. But he closed with back-to-back three-putts for bogey on the last two holes to set his score at 1-over.
The statistics of the round show that Tiger Woods did not have his usual average driving distance (294.30 yards). He also had problems with his play around the green (‘Stroke Gained: Around the Green of -0.833).
