Luke Humphries described his partnership with Michael Smith as a ‘cheat code’ after the England pair came up trumps at the World Cup of Darts. They secured a 10-6 win over Austria in Sunday’s final to secure a record-breaking fifth title after beating Scotland in the last four.

Humphries made four 100-plus checkouts as England cruised to victory over the Austrian duo of Rowby-John Rodriguez and Mensur Suljovic. Smith went on to strike the decisive blow in the final leg, hitting double eight to secure England’s first World Cup triumph since 2016.

Speaking after the match, Humphries was quick to heap praise on Smith as he reflected on their incredible partnership.

“We really wanted this and we really believed we could win it,” he said. “We’ve got a cheat code! The world No 1 and the world No 3 against the field. It’s quite tough for everyone else. After the first game we clicked.

“A lot of teams were worried that we weren’t going to click but we were only worried about ourselves. We knew that if we played our best we could do it and we did. I just hope we get to come back next year and defend it as the champions, which would be nice.

“We played as a team and I believe if I had gone first, it wouldn’t have worked out the way it did. We had the right regime and we worked the right thing out. The best scorer goes first. I’m not the best finisher in the world but my finishing has been fantastic. We just worked so well as a team.

“Honestly, it’s one of the greatest feelings ever to be World Cup champions for the first time in eight years. It really does mean the world.”
