On Thursday night, as the Kansas City Chiefs prepared to face the Detroit Lions, former Republican candidate for governor of Arizona Kari Lake criticized the National Football League.
Lift Every Voice and Sing, sometimes referred to as the Black national anthem, was performed during the pregame ceremonies by a local youth choir group. The song was played before the rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”. Lake expressed her displeasure in a post.
“I hear the @NFL is still trying to shove this divisive nonsense down America’s throat. I won’t put up with it.
Literally,” she penned on X, a platform that was formerly Twitter.

At Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona, earlier this year, Lake made a post about a photo of herself sitting during the Black national anthem.
On social media, Lake and many others expressed their disapproval of the song.
Before the Super Bowl LVI and the draft in April 2021, the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was played.
Prior to the Los Angeles Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals Super Bowl last year, Mary Mary performed it.
In the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, the NFL began to play the Black national anthem during the 2020 season. The incident sparked a nationwide movement against racial injustice.
