A New York Jets player was fined for a missed call that could have stopped the game-winning touchdown.
Chazz Surratt of the New York Jets was fined for tripping a Buffalo Bills player during Xavier Gipson’s game-winning touchdown in Week One’s Monday Night Football contest.
Following the game-winning touchdown against the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets linebacker Chazz Surratt was penalized.
Xavier Gipson’s overtime touchdown and a walk-off punt return helped the Jets win their Monday Night Football game to start the season.
The NFL game between the Jets and AFC East ended with a Jets victory of 22-16.
Gipson led the Jets to a touchdown in overtime with a 65-yard punt return. The undrafted free agent signed a contract in the off-season and was added to the 53-man roster before winning the game in his NFL debut.
Surratt, however, has now been penalized for “unnecessary roughness” during the game-winning play.
For tripping Bills tight end Quintin Morris during the touchdown, the Jets linebacker was assessed a $4,833 (£3,902) fine.
The touchdown call was upheld throughout the game, resulting in a victory for the Jets.
However, former NFL referee John Parry claimed during ESPN’s coverage of the game that Surratt’s trip was missed and that the touchdown should not have been allowed to stand as a result.
Parry said on ESPN, “You’ve got to put an asterisk on it because there wasn’t a tripping call made.
Right at the 23-yard line, No., a trip and a leg whip. 55 [Surratt], which would have returned the touchdown.
“.
Even though the Jets won the game, Aaron Rodgers’ injury may have cast a negative light on the evening. The seasoned quarterback was forced off the field and taken to the hospital after suffering an Achilles injury on the game’s fourth play.
Rodgers underwent surgery and would miss the rest of the season, it was later revealed.
Since the Jets acquired Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in April, there has been more anticipation for the 2023 campaign.
In the wake of Aaron Rodgers’ injury, head coach Robert Saleh will now look to Zach Wilson to fill in and perform. Wilson had been the Jets’ starting quarterback for the majority of the previous two seasons, but after Rodgers was signed, Wilson was demoted to the backup position.
Unless a new quarterback is signed to the roster before the trade deadline on October 31, he will now resume serving as the starter for the remainder of the season.
