On a chaotic attempt to steal home, the Mexican Playoff Series comes to an end.
You’ve never seen a baseball game end as it did on Tuesday night between the Mexican League’s Algodoneros de Unión Laguna and Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos.
.
The best-of-seven Zona Norte Championship Series, which is similar to MLB’s League Championship Series, was down three games to two going into the sixth game.
Former first-round draft pick Henry Gatewood of the Brewers hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut Laguna’s lead to 3-2. Cade Gotta tripled with two outs to put the tying run on third for Laredo.
Things then began to spiral out of control.
Gotta suddenly dashed for home as the batter Alonzo Harris had a 0-2 count.
However, the defense picked up on his attempted steal, and Gotta would be out by such a large margin that his only chance of getting out was to try to run right through the catcher.
It was unsuccessful.
.
And that was how the game—as well as the series—ended.
For the game’s 27th out, Gotta was tagged out.
Laguna will now play the Pericos de Puebla in the Serie del Rey after Laredo lost the game and the series.
However, the drama continued on.
Both benches were empty after Gotta’s needlessly violent play.
.
He may be quite quick (he stole 21 bases in 66 games this season), but taking such a huge risk with your team’s season on the line makes you wonder what the hell Gotta was thinking.
It would have been a fantastic play if it had succeeded. Instead, Gotta simply makes a fool of himself by rashly rushing home with the outcome of the game at stake.
