There were many uncertainties surrounding the Cleveland Browns’ defense prior to the start of the season.
Four games into the season, strong safety Grant Delpit has aided in providing some of those answers.

In various parts of the field, the defense has catchy names and stars. Delpit has proven to be an underappreciated playmaker for the Browns across the board.

Through four games, defensive ends Myles Garrett and Za’Darius Smith have taken the lead and helped the Browns defense to a number of high rankings in various statistical categories.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, a young linebacker, is in the middle of the field with some more seasoned players.

Greg Newsome II, a second-year cornerback, and standout cornerback Denzel Ward are also members of the defense.

The team has a history of failing to tackle when given the chance to cut down on extra yards and giving up big plays down the middle.

This has largely changed this season, and Delpit has a lot to do with it.

With 21 total tackles, safety Grant Delpit is tied with Owusu-Koramoah for the team lead and has assisted the team in resolving some of its earlier issues.

16 solo and 5 assisted tackles are also shared by the two of them. Delpit has also added a tackle for a loss, two passes defended, a fumble recovery, and the team’s lone interception.

Delpit, who was selected by the Browns in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of LSU, is currently in his third season.

In his two previous seasons, he recorded 105 and 66 total tackles.
After appearing in all 17 games the previous season, he had four interceptions.

Ward and Newsome have so far done a good job of covering, with the Ravens being the only team to really have trouble with the defense by running up the middle and on the ground.

When the team was prone to giving up yards, safety Grant Delpit helped cover those areas and appeared to be near the ball all the time.

Delpit, who spent three seasons with LSU, was consistently among the team leaders in tackles, had eight interceptions, 170.5 tackles for loss, and seven sacks during his time in Baton Rouge.

Through three games, they had only allowed one offensive touchdown, but in the Baltimore Ravens’ offense, led by Lamar Jackson, they conceded four—two through the air and four on the ground.

After the bye, they will receive a challenging schedule from George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Christian McCaffery.

Following that in the next two weeks will be the talented Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and the potent Seattle Seahawks offense.

Although the defense has earned its praise, which is well-deserved, it is clear that they quickly revert to their old habits given the offense’s offensive woes and the last game’s four touchdowns they allowed.
