Tyreek Hill provides an explanation of why he wants the NFL to reinstate the contentious rule that was dropped after only one season.
The NFL decided to abandon the contentious rule after just one season after experimenting with instant replay on pass interference in 2019.
But at least one player wants the league to revive the rule.
.
Dolphins star Tyreek Hill revealed that he actually liked the rule on the most recent episode of his podcast “It Needed to be Said.”.
.
You’re aware that there used to be a rule allowing you to contest a defensive pass interference call, according to Hill.
I think it was two years ago when they removed that rule, but it used to be a rule.
Why they took it away is a mystery to me.
“.
Prior to the 2020 season, the NFL abandoned the rule, a decision Hill did not appreciate.
.
I believe they ought to bring that back, Hill said.
Bring that back and just add the receiving yards to my yardage if it’s a pass interference.
“.
Hill didn’t go into great detail as to why he wants the rule to be reinstated, but it probably has something to do with the fact that the majority of defenders will do whatever they can to slow him down.
One of the NFL’s fastest players, Hill probably feels like he isn’t getting all the calls while running his routes.
.
The likelihood that the league will reinstate the rule is essentially zero percent, which is unfortunate for Hill. The primary motivation behind the rule’s implementation was the NFL’s response to the contentious finish to the 2018 NFC championship game.
.
In that particular game, with only a few minutes remaining, Saints quarterback Drew Brees attempted to pass to Tommylee Lewis, but Lewis was knocked over by Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman, who struck Lewis before the ball even touched the ground.
After the no-call, the contest went into overtime, which the Rams ultimately won 26–23. The NFL responded by passing a new PI rule because the missed call was so egregious.
.
Troy Vincent, the NFL’s vice president of football operations, acknowledged that the league “failed miserably” by even implementing the rule because it was so bad during its one season of use.
.
In May 2020, Vincent said of the rule, “You can’t rush and just shove something in there without knowing all the consequences.”.
And we publicly learned that last year, live and in action.
Last year, we failed miserably because we didn’t do [our due diligence].
“.
According to ESPN.com, only 24 of the 101 pass interference calls and no-calls that were reviewed were reversed.
.
In other words, unless Hill wins the election for NFL commissioner in the near future, this is one rule that most likely won’t be reinstated.
