SF Giants are reportedly interviewing Red Sox legend and coach Jason Varitek for the manager position.

Permission to speak with Boston Red Sox coach Jason Varitek has been given to the SF Giants in their pursuit of a new manager.

Per a report by Joel Sherman of the New York Post, MLB insider, the San Francisco Giants have been given permission to speak with Boston Red Sox coach Jason Varitek in their quest for a new manager.
Later this week, Varitek and Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi are anticipated to have a preliminary discussion regarding the opening that resulted from Gabe Kapler’s firing.
Over the course of more than 25 years, Varitek has worked with the Red Sox as a coach, consultant, and player.
He currently works for manager Alex Cora as the coordinator of game planning and coach for catchers.

Sherman stated, “Varitek and the Giants are anticipated to have an informational phone call in the next days so the sides can become acquainted and decide whether to proceed with the process.”.

In the course of his 15-year playing career, during which he was a member of the Red Sox, Varitek established a reputation as one of the league’s top defensive catchers. Varitek struck a .256.
341–.
435 with 193 home runs, three All-Star selections, a Gold Glove, and a Silver Slugger Award.
A member of two World Series-winning teams, he caught four no-hitters in his career.

Varitek continued to work for the Red Sox as a special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington after he retired at the end of the 2011 campaign. Varitek joined Cora’s coaching staff as a non-uniformed coordinator of game planning after serving as a consultant for multiple front offices.
Before agreeing to a three-year extension to stay on staff as a game planning coordinator/catcher coach after the 2022 season, his title was changed to player information coach in 2021.

For the majority of his playing career, Varitek was thought of as a potential manager, but he has no managerial or bench coaching experience.
His name is associated with the SF Giants’ managerial opening; he is the second former catcher without prior managerial experience. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser revealed last week that Mariners coach Stephen Vogt would be interviewed by the Giants.
